THE OTHERNESS of SEXUALITY – Lecture with Discussion by Prof. Gullestad Tickets, Sat, Mar 26, 2022 at 9:00 AM | Eventbrite
Dr. philos. Siri Erika Gullestad is Professor emeritus of clinical psychology, University of Oslo, Norway and a training and supervising psychoanalyst. S. Gullestad is former dean of the Department of Psychology, University of Oslo, and former president of the Norwegian Psychoanalytic Society. For many years, she was the leader of Clinic for Psychodynamic therapy, providing training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy for psychology students. She is an experienced teacher and supervisor. S. Gullestad is the author of numerous articles and books within the psychoanalytic field. Her latest book, co-authored with Bjørn Killingmo, is The theory and practice of psychoanalytic therapy. Listening for the subtext (Routledge, 2020).
During the lecture, prof. Gullestad will explore how the psychoanalytic drive theories of Freud, Laplanche and Lacan elucidate the conflicted nature of desire and object choice. She emphasizes the inherent tension in Freud’s thinking between the non-object-relatedness and object- relatedness of drive, as well as the conflictual path of object choice. Through discussion of Laplanche’s theory of the origin and nature of the drive, prof. Gullestad underlines the significance of the unconscious, enigmatic messages of the object. In the discurse she also argues that Freud, Laplanche and Lacan, although in different ways, convey an idea of sexuality’s otherness. This otherness may contribute to highlight divisions in the sphere of love, e.g. splits between sexuality and attachment so often encountered in clinical practice, when erotic desire comes into conflict with the need for a safe and stable relationship. The purpose of the lecture is to explicate the clinical value of a listening perspective entrenched in drive theory for understanding the ambivalence, conflicts and paradoxes of human object choice.
